What is carbon neutrality?

Carbon neutrality is an interim measure on the way to net zero emissions. Being carbon neutral means that you are purchasing carbon offsets equal to your organisation’s emissions. Over time, your goal should be to reduce carbon offset purchases and focus on decarbonising your operations and value chain.

In Australia, the most highly regarded standard to achieve carbon neutrality is the voluntary Climate Active Standard, which is administered by the Commonwealth Government. If you are looking to be carbon neutral in multiple jurisdictions, such as New Zealand, you can also use the Toitu program, or seek dual certification.

Becoming carbon neutral shows that you are taking a stand in terms of climate change and that you want to be a leading organisation. It signals to your staff, suppliers, and customers that you have a purpose beyond making money.
