The topic sparked deeper research, review of real users’ experience, and analysis of the emerging models. The findings were too interesting not to share.
Introduction
Australia’s dual-cab ute market – once dominated by Toyota’s HiLux and now ruled by Ford’s Ranger – is entering a new era. With the arrival of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) like the BYD Shark 6, GWM Cannon Alpha, and Ford Ranger PHEV, a new class of dual-cab utes is offering greater flexibility, lower running costs, and electric-only driving for short trips—all while retaining the practicality and utility that Australian buyers expect. The new contenders
BYD Shark 6 PHEV
A tech-forward entrant with up to 100 km claimed EV range (70–90 km real-world), the Shark has quickly built a following. Priced around $60–65K driveaway, it offers luxury interior features, a 30 kWh battery, and up to 6.6 kW of AC power export—ideal for site work or recreational use. However, its lower towing capacity (2.5 T) may limit its appeal for heavy-duty roles.
GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV

Its digital dash and bold cabin styling appeal to early adopters, but details like spare tyre placement (in the tray) and unclear power export functionality may frustrate some users.
Ford Ranger PHEV
Ford’s late entry retains the Ranger’s trusted platform, pairing a 2.3L petrol engine with a 19.3 kWh battery. The result is ~45 km of EV range, strong 3.5 T towing capacity, and 6.9 kW of exportable power. While the electrification is modest, it retains full job-site readiness. Expect pricing between $72–90K depending on spec.
